Bharatnatyam, one of India’s most ancient classical dance forms, originated in the southern state of Tamilnadu. The word Bharatanatyam itself comes from BHA- Bhava (Expression), RA- Raga (Music) and TA- Tala (Rhythm). In ancient times, this elegant and graceful dance form was performed in Hindu temples by dancers who were called devadasis. In fact Bharatnatyam was originally called Dasi Attam. This is because in Hinduism, gods and dieties were considered revered guests in their temple abodes, who had to be offered hospitality and entertainment, including pleasing music and dance. So, most of the major Hindu temples maintained troupes of trained dancers, and ancient kings were great patrons of this art which was considered spiritual. Bharatanatyam was perceived as sacred ritual that brought spiritual upliftment to both the audience and the dancer. Many of the exquisite stone sculptures carved centuries ago in famous Hindu temples are based on Bharatnatyam postures.
